Waiting For Chicks

October 11th, 2006 at 03:16 pm

Since the coop is done........I just had to have chickens. Waiting for spring was going to require more patience than I have.

Plus, when I looked up my usual chicken supplier, they had an end of season special that I couldn't pass up. Who knew there were close out sales on chicks?

So, I'm getting the usual 24 that I paid for and 1 free surprise chick in the mail this week. Staying close to home in the AM, so I'm here when the phone call comes. Then, it's off to the post office with the heater blasting on the van........to claim my little box of "peeps".

We're almost set up here at home for the chick nursery. Still need to pick up the sack of Chick Feed today, but we'll only need one of those and they will be big enough to start eating regular food. Not a big expense to get this new addition to the "ranch" up and running.

I've had my own flock of birds now for a couple decades so this past year without the eggs has been a big adjustment. So has trying to figure out what to do with all the waste from the kitchen! The chickens used to handle all that and more!

I don't know if we save money with our own chickens, probably not, since ours are pretty spoiled. But, we get a better product and don't spend more money for the eggs. Plus, since I'm cooking less, for fewer people, there is a chance I'll have extra eggs, especially this spring. Selling just a couple dozen eggs a week would make the project hold its' own.

We had chickens in Florida and I loved it. Up here, I have raised mallards twice and they are fun. I would love to be able to buy fresh eggs from someone! Start saving all your egg cartoons!

er....you can get chicks MAILED to you??...that has got to be one of the hugest cultural shocks of my life!...of course, seeing how a letter going from one end of the city to the other might take up to 2 weeks to arrive in the mail here...hmmmm....cc companies, bannkes, utilities companies and anyone sending time-sensitive shipments uses couriers here!...

chicks in the mail!!!! ...I'd love to see that!

yeah I am a city girl, I really don't know any of this, but I can guess at what happens to the old ones..soup?

My sister raises chickens. My girls love to go "egg hunting" when they visit. And she never comes to town empty handed, always fresh produce and eggs!

I'm all set now........but still no chicks. I guess I've had too many positives to think of any negatives to having a flock of birds Princess Perky.

I'm going to have to wait about 4 more months til they start laying, so no omelettes in our future just yet!

I've allerted the post office, and given them both my phone numbers so there should be no glitch. Still could arrive this evening........but I'm betting on getting a chicken wake up call.

What an adventure your life seems to be. Looking forward to hearing about the chicks growing up to be useful members of your motley group.
