Shopped With A List

August 22nd, 2006 at 05:15 am

I don't do the grocery shopping for our household. I do make out the lists however........but today, I did both.

What an amazing place grocery stores have become, at least in my area. My mom took me to her favorite store after we had gone out to an impromptu dinner and I just wandered around sort of in a daze.

The already prepared stuff area was bigger, by far, than the sections with plain food in them. When did that happen? The cafe was as big as the produce section used to be and there was even a take out sushi bar!! This isn't even in downtown Seattle, but way out in the suburbs.

I managed to find all 3 items on my little list, and then splurged on a 'gift' for our Navy man here, I couldn't resist.
He said he has been asking the cook on board his ship to provide him raisens for his oatmeal in the AM and has been told "Sir, the Navy doesn't have raisens". So, of course, I bought him a little package of those little boxes of raisens. I can't wait til he finds them in his in box area here in the house! Worth the money in my book.

So, I made it out of the store with 4 things, and my moms milk. I don't care if I never do the grocery store run again....it was just TOO much stuff for me. I'll be content with listing the things we need in the kitchen on my list; posted on the fridge and then putting the items away when they arrive after someone goes shopping. I'm definately spoiled!

the grocery business is has narrow, narrow margins. If you find you are making a good profit on the prepared food, there'll be more prepared food. Sad really - people don't cook, they pick up the prepared food, they don't learn to cook, there's more prepared food.

Hey, I thought the Navy had the best food, or so my contacts in the various branches of the military tell me.

I heard this particular ship & crew had won a woo-hoo commendation re; their food service too........it was announced at the change of command like it was a pretty big thing...

But, Navy person said he requested raisins for his oatmeal and was just told politely that they didn't have any. He said he wouldn't give up, but it's been fun to joke around with him about the lack of food on the ship.

There are some extenuating circumstances he explained (I'm learning so much about the Navy!) The last trip out was to Central America and there are lots of things that can't come back in the states, so the crew was doing a great job of using stuff up rather than dumping it. Now, when they are in port, the crew is trying to use down to nothing, as the whole system needs to be shut down for repair or whatever they do when they're in port. (no water, no refrigeration, etc) So, perhaps the raisins will return.......Smile
I just checked, and my little offering of raisins has been picked up already this AM! So, he should be a happy camper with his breakfast today.
