Gardening as Therapy

April 23rd, 2006 at 05:33 am

I escaped to the yard today........and all 3 boys came with me! Wouldn't you know? I put them to work for a bit, then got out the riding mower and climbed on. When I'm mowing, they know to leave me alone. It's MY time. I've got at least an acre to mow here; and it relaxes me, gets me out in the fresh air and I've got plenty of time to mentally make out the Garden TO DO List!

If any of you are doing much the same thing; getting out in your gardens or even planting a pot of herbs on your porch.........there is a new site here just for gardeners. Actually, it's for gardeners aiming to garden without spending buckets of money.

Text is www.frugalgardening.com and Link is http://www.frugalgardening.com
www.frugalgardening.com

Please visit & let me know what you think. It's in the beginning stage....there will be one new article each week in addition to a tips section.
Feel free to let me know of topics you would like to see covered and please do send in your gardening tips!!

I don't proclaim to be an expert gardener, but I sure can garden without spending money!

I think I am going to try some tomatoes in pots on the deck. How many do you think I should put in one pot? (I was going to get the big pots that sit on the ground, not little ones.)

1 tomato plant needs a minimum of a 5 gallon pot or bucket, needs to be watered twice a day, and needs to be fertilized weekly. There is a book by Patricia Lanza called Lasagna Gardening for Small Spaces: A Layering System for Big Results in Small Spaces and Containers, that you should see if your library has. It is wonderful for letting you know what you really need to do for container gardening.

I would only put one plant in each container & at least the 5 gal size.
It's important to pick out the right plant too, tomatoes come in basically 2 types, bush or dwarf like and then the great big plants that need some sort of support in order to stay up off the ground. I actually classify a 3rd type in my gardens and that is the cherry tom. types........they grow so leggy & huge most times for me, that I have an actual trellis arrangement for them.
Many gardeners advocate planting tomatoes so the first bunch of leaves are below ground. I've tried it, and haven't noticed much difference. But, the last couple years I've had the icky blight business on all my tomatoes. I've moved, so hoping I've escaped it!!! (not the reason I moved! Smile

I tried your site but couldn't get in. Could be you are fixing it?? I love to garden on the cheap. I remember an older neighbor of mine who would take walks and just snip off plants or flowers he liked along the way and then take them home and root them. He had a wonderful garden too. It was how he spent his summer evenings before we had all this tv we have now, just gardening.
